"Carving Out a Safari" - Feature PDF Format Article
This unique commission is a solid cherry "Safari Chest" featuring three panoramic scenes highlighting Whitetail Deer, Bear, and Elk. Projects of this nature are true works of art, they allow Artisans to show off not only their abilities to build a piece of furniture, but to carve and impart color into the piece.
Pre-finishing photos shown below illustrate the detail level of the carving and the woodburing. Wildlife carvings can be finished natural, or enhanced with color as shown above.
These photos show the chest with the carving and burning completed. We should note, that we offer carvings of all sorts without tinting, just the natural finish or stain applied to the wood brings out an amazing warm glow even without color.
Every project starts with a load of materials, and progresses into processing this material to length, width, and thickness. Then moving into joint work, dry fitting, various assembly stages, together and apart, etc.
The frames are always dry-fit and then the panels dry-fit before any adhesives are applied. In the case where carving will be required, the piece is built and fully assembled dry, then disassembled and the carving completed before the final and permanent assembly.
These photos show the chest lid and case assembled with the carvings completed.
